createAppearance() loads two ground textures (the grass and stones) and combines them as decals. The second texture (the stones) has transparent parts, so both textures can be seen at runtime. The third texture, the light map, is modulated with the others so they all remain visible. The light map can either be loaded from a file or be drawn at runtime. The drawing method, lightMapTUS(), is commented out in the previous code. The light map image in light.gif is shown in Figure 6-15.

All the rendering that is passed to the graphics hardware will be drawn to the screen using surfaces based on triangular primitives, exactly the same as those we used directly back in the XNA chapters. This figure tells us how many accelerated surfaces are being rendered by each update.

As we ran the benchmark queries, and as you can see in the results, we found very little difference between having a trigger handling the data and putting the data directly into the table (and with the UPDATE and DELETE, having the trigger improves performance). There are a few explanations for this:

We can clearly see the effect of this by running the ProceduralAnimation project. Ensure that the RaindropCount constant is set back to 20 and then run the project and take a look at the GPU Surface Count reading. The value displayed is 021. This figure is formed from an internal surface that Silverlight uses within all of its pages, plus 20 raindrop surfaces one for each raindrop being displayed. Now stop the project and locate the constructor for the Raindrop class. The very last line is commented out, but sets the sprite s UseBitmapCache property to false. Uncomment this line so that bitmap caching is disabled for all the raindrops and then run the project again. Now the GPU surface count shows 001. Only the internal surface is being rendered by the GPU; all the sprites are being handled in the much slower software renderer instead. Clearly the GPU is being used for sprites that have bitmap caching enabled, and it is also used for sprites that are transformed using storyboards. Keeping an eye on this figure is useful, but there is in fact an even easier way of visualizing hardware-accelerated graphics, as you will see in a moment.

The triggers execute extremely quickly. In the case of one-statement triggers, this is likely. In the instance where a trigger contains a significant amount of logic that must be run for every record, it s more likely that performance will drop. Because INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE statements interact with data on the disk, we may be seeing the I/O of the disks as the most significant piece of the performance here, making the trigger processing time insignificant. The examples used in our performance tests were too simplistic to truly test the impact that triggers have on the data going into a table. While this is possible, the second trigger example is typical of the kind of processing that would be likely in a real-world scenario. We can t suggest how significant these numbers are. You ll need to decide if the additional overhead is worth having trigger functionality in your database. As with all database functionality, you should spend time benchmarking your database. Before you roll out your triggerbased implementation, take time to benchmark each trigger under real-world loads, and be sure that you can accept whatever performance degradation your application will experience as a result.
